POCUS Profile

We recently interacted with Dr. Vijay Hadda, who is the Additional Professor for the department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at renowned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.  He completed his medicine degree from AIIMS, Delhi in 2005 and is an eminent personality in the field of pulmonary medicine in India. Dr Hadda is quite passionate about point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) technology and has been utilizing it in his routine clinical practice for 15 years.

According to Dr. Hadda, POCUS is vital for management of patients with various life-threatening conditions, especially in emergency wards and intensive care units. “Inclusion of point-of-care ultrasound as an integral part of diagnostic algorithm of acute hypoxemia and shock will reduce the chances of misdiagnosis, and will promote early and correct diagnosis to reduce time for initiation of definite therapy”, said Dr. Hadda. “It is also crucial for guided insertion of central lines, pleural procedures, and sampling of peripherally located lung lesions”, added Dr. Hadda.

Dr. Hadda is currently using Sonosite EDGE II ultrasound system in his department and finds it very sturdy and easy to use. He and his team of clinicians extensively deploy the FUJIFILM Sonosite system for assessment of patients with acute hypoxemia, shock, pleural pathology, and sampling of peripheral lung lesions. It is used for almost all patients who undergo transbronchial lung biopsy, to rule out post-procedure pneumothorax.

Dr. Hadda was the esteemed faculty and member of the organizing committee of the recent AIIMS PULMOCRIT 2023 conference (the spectacular academic show in the field of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine) and he strongly believes that POCUS is imperative for clinicians in indoor patient settings to deliver excellent patient care.
