Bothell, WA, January 27, 2015 – FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc. and The Floating Doctors, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting improvements in healthcare delivery worldwide announced today the release of the first video of a new innovative series titled “Bridging the Gap.” The six-part video series will educate the general public about the impacts of hand- carried ultrasound equipment in remote locations. Subscribers will watch how a timely ultrasound exam prevents a breach birth in the jungle; see a small child diagnosed with a serious heart condition, and more.
“Point-of-care ultrasound has also found its way into remote corners of the world where funds, facilities, and space are limited,” said Ellen Clements, Global Health and Education Manager at FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc. “FUJIFILM Sonosite is proud to be working with Floating Doctors as they bring vital healthcare to remote communities and we are excited to be able to capture the stories of those impacted by the care Dr. LaBrot and others are providing."
Floating Doctors are using open boats to get to remote coastal communities separated from modern healthcare. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 60% of the world’s population has no access to diagnostic medical imageing. FUJIFILM Sonosite is working to lower that statistic. Since 2005, FUJIFILM has supported humanitarian efforts in developing countries by providing high-quality ultrasound equipment through loans or special pricing to qualified nonprofit organisations through its SoundCaring and other Global Health programmes.
“FUJIFILM Sonosite’s ultrasound equipment is uniquely suited for austere environments. Early diagnosis makes all the difference, often between life and death,” Dr. Benjamin LaBrot, Founder, Floating Doctors. “The video series shows what difference physicians can make, and the reassurance that comes from a diagnosis on the spot with hand-carried ultrasound.”
