Fulfilling a Promise To Iraq with Point-of-Care Ultrasound
Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, is slowly rebuilding its healthcare infrastructure after years of war and destruction. Dr Henryk Pich, a consultant anaesthetist and intensive care physician at the University of Dresden, Germany, visited the region soon after the fighting had ended, supported by the independent aid organisation CADUS. Moved by the makeshift treatment centres he witnessed in the hospital ruins, he promised the skeleton team of local doctors at the pediatric hospital that he would return, bringing with him much needed equipment and training resources.
Creating the Mobile Ultrasound Patrol in Morocco
Every day, 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth and 99% live in rural areas. Many of them could be prevented with proper maternal care including ultrasound imaging during their pregnancy, which is why Sonosite partnered with Qualcomm Wireless Reach, Trice Imaging Inc., and Sony to create the Mobile Ultrasound Patrol project, a trial project in Morocco that showed that bringing ultrasound to the point-of-care with remote interpretation can reduce turnaround time to 24 hours, while decreasing cost from $80 to $2 per study.
Investigating Ebola on the Front Lines with Ultrasound
From ground zero of the Ebola outbreak, Dr.Trish Henwood embarked on a medical mission with the Sonosite M-Turbo to better understand the pathophysiology of Ebola. Dr. Henwood's specialty is utilizing point-of-care ultrasound in remote areas where there are no other diagnostic tools, and she spent five weeks in Bong County, a remote area in Northern Liberia, in an Ebola treatment unit run by the International Medical Corps.
